Featured Article - Philippines 2006 Report
The Philippines is a beautiful country with lots of beautiful people. Manila is a very busy city on the island of Luzon with approximately 13 million residents. The land mass of Manila is equal to the area of Amarillo and Canyon put together. Life is quite varied there from the mansions of the rich to the tin and grass huts of the squatters. English and Tegali are languages commonly spoken, but each island has its own dialect. Due to Spanish influence with Magellan, many surnames and words have Spanish origin. Travel consists of tricycles (taxis that carry 1-2 people), jeepneys (taxis that carry up to 16 people), and buses that carry as many as they can cram in one. Eighty-five percent of the 74 million Filipinos are Catholic, but there are a number of large spirit-fllled churches in Manila. Islamic influence is strong in Mindanao, another island. Public and private schools are available to educate the children. Over 8 million OFW’s (overseas foreign workers) leave the country yearly to work in other countries. Cabbage, celery, broccoli, squash, peppers, and cauliflower are crops in the mountain area. Rice is the main staple, and it is eaten at every meal. The countryside is carpeted with green terraces, and many beautiful flowers adorn the landscape. Fred and Irene left Friday, September 22, from Amarillo with layovers in Houston, San Francisco, and Tai Pai. Tony Poole and his friend, Ramon, Head of Customs, escorted us through the “diplomat” line at the airport on Sunday morning the 24th. God was already making connections and favoring his children. Our hosts, Tony and Calli Poole, helped us settle in at the Dunamis International Mission Centre. Between the two houses there is room for up to 40 American-type guests or 80 Filipino guests. Rest was a necessity before loading the van after midnight and traveling through the night. (Traffic is so congested that night travel is necessary to shorten travel time). The Leadership Conference was scheduled to start on Monday in the mountain village of Mankayan, eleven hours north of Manila. Dunamis graduates had made the trek up the mountain before we arrived. They went door-to-door evangelizing each day, while Fred, Irene, and Tony preached and ministered in the churches. Tony taught his soul winning class using his new “Are You Born Again?” tract and training manual. At night the team of almost 30 met at the Lepanto Community Building to see the fruit of their labor. Approximately 500 souls were won to Jesus by Wednesday night! The Spirit of God hovered over the auditorium the last night while many children, young people, and adults wept before the Lord for over 1½ hours. It was an awesome sight, and only God knows the full extent of what happened. Worship took on a whole new meaning! The return trip began early on Thursday morning, because shopping was scheduled at Bagio City, and of course, breakfast at McDonald’s. The panoramic view from the mountain was breath-taking, as was the curves and sudden stops on the decent. Calli, Felicity, Erick, and driver, Emil and Irene enjoyed shopping for vegetables at the farmer’s market. Outdoor shops across from the strawberry fields was the place we found our treasures to take home. While leaving the city a text was received that a typhoon had ravaged Manila. The full extent was not known until we arrived about eight hours later. Large billboards were folded in half and large trees were uprooted and laid in the streets. The storm was over, but the power and water were not available for over three days. In some areas many homes were damaged and lives were lost, but the mission center had been protected. No trees were destroyed, only small plants and flowers were damaged. Praise the Lord for his protection! Fred preached and ministered at two Full Gospel Businessmen meetings. He and Tony met with an influential head of the OFW’s to make future plans for their spiritual training before leaving the country. About forty pastors gathered at Faith Center Church for their weekly meeting. Fred was privileged to preach after a fired-up woman preacher spoke in Tegali. We did not know what she said, but we were excited by her fervor. Pastor Jun fellowshipped with us in his office at the mall church. Pastor Noli and Donna Cadelina from Faith In Jesus Christian Fellowship welcomed Fred in their pulpit on Sunday. The church suffered extensive roof damage, but they continued to meet without 1/3 of the roof and no air con. Fred had a mandate from the Lord to preach about God’s love. He encouraged the people not to think of love as a simple message, but to realize that God is love. If the people of God are like his son, Jesus, they will give and receive the love of God. Without love, you have nothing of value. During the trip we met some very interesting characters. Governor Doding Villegas invited us to join him at the Yacht Club one night. God gave him a word of knowledge to support Dunamis International before he even knew Tony Poole. He and Tony fellowship regularly now and share about what God is doing in the Philippines. Congressman Sid Aligada was in attendance at the Full Gospel Businessmen’s meeting at the Country Club. He and his daughter both attended and received ministry that evening. Thomas Futch told of his world mission exploits on the plane from LA to Houston. His testimony of having died and been in the presence of Jesus kept Irene awake in the middle of the night! Maya told Fred about being converted from Hinduism while traveling from Tai Pai to LA. She was convinced that if she could be saved, God could do anything. Visions frequently are seen as she fellowships with her Lord Jesus. Lillie spoke of being a Muslim who was born again. She graduated from Dunamis International School of Missions and has won over 1000 souls to the kingdom since December! Tony and Lillie are planning to compose a simple tract for Muslims, like the Catholic tract, “Are You Born Again?” Fred and Tony spent one day looking intently at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Peter Tay of Almighty Explorer Corporation is a master diver and was their guide. Fred’s life-long dream of scuba diving in the ocean came to pass. God made beauty all over his creation from the top to the bottom. Colorful fish and plants and creatures were captured with an underwater camera. Fred has now compiled his new pictures from the trip for those who are interested. The morning of October 7th Fred’s parents, Glynn and Layvon Hughes, and long-time friend, Stephnie Smith, Genesys and Taylor McMillion greeted us at the Amarillo airport. We rejoiced that the Lord had brought us back to the Panhandle of Texas safely. We send our thanks to all of you faithful financial and prayer supporters. We would not be able to leave home without your support. More than ever before we feel compelled to make disciples, make soul winners, wherever we go. It seems that many Christians have concentrated on the “teaching” part of the scripture and have forgotten about winning souls. It is time to shake off the lethargy and rekindle the fire for the night is coming when no man can work. We must join together in the mission to bring in the harvest. Jesus is coming soon! Prophetic Countdown - World Wide Unrest
The news is pouring in - NUKES - MASS MURDERS - GLOBAL THREATS OF EPIDEMICS - GENISIDES - ACTS OF NATURAL DISTRUCTION - ETC. It is enough to make anyone fearful. 2 Tim 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Luke 21:26 - 28 Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." In times of trouble and unrest, the peace of God will sustain you. Do not Fear, but walk in faith and comfort others. Do the work of the evangelist. You have the good news, and they who are in fear are seeking rest and hope. You have the answer! His name is Jesus! Fear will always falter in the face of love. God is love! by Fred Hughes [Return To Top] Decision One - Souls
Prov 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. I am convinced that soul winning is the primary thing that every Christian should be concerned with in life. The love of God was shed abroad in us by the Holy Spirit to equip us to do great exploits for the kingdom. Be WISE, ask God who He wants you to visit with, then just ask about where they will be spending eternity. If you are genuine and loving, you may be privileged to introduce that person to Jesus. by Fred Hughes
Trips & Tips - Beautiful Feet, Beautiful Hands
As this newsletter goes out Irene and I are still recovering from jet lag. We had hoped to send the newsletter out on time from the Philippines, but the typhoon left us without internet service. We hope that you will someday join us on a mission trip. Mission trips change your lives and make you appreciate even the simplest things. In 2007 we are planning several exciting trips that you can be a part of. As the scripture says: Rom 10:15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!" We are a beautiful feet ministry, but beautiful feet cannot go, if they are not sent! Your financial gifts are what moves the glad tidings of good things. Perhaps the beautiful hands of the giver are the most important link in the ministry. Please prayerfully consider becoming a partner to this ministry today! Your monthly commitments bring great stability to the ministry. We especially want to thank those of you who are faithful in this way and for your loving investment in the Kingdom of God. Fred & Irene Hughes
